George Washington was born in Virginia in 1732, and he became a surveyor before joining the Virginia militia. He rose to prominence during the Revolutionary War, leading the Continental Army to victory against the British. After the war, he retired to his plantation at Mount Vernon, but he was soon called back into service to lead the Constitutional Convention.
Washington was unanimously elected as our first president, and he took office in 1789. He was faced with many challenges, including the task of creating a functioning government from scratch. He also had to deal with a series of rebellions, including the Whiskey Rebellion and the Shays' Rebellion.
Despite these challenges, Washington was successful in his role as president. He helped to establish many of the key institutions of our government, including the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and the presidential veto.
